Lord knows the major media doesn't do much - or, more accurately, nearly enough - to promote the U.S. Open Cup, so I thought I'd do my bit here. Because this is a West Coast affair, I'm not even behind yet....whew.
Anyway, MLSnet.com pulled together a nice plug. Given the rivalry between the two teams, one might think they'd work that a little more, but the focus instead goes on the Rapids semi-mysterious loss of home form (getting used to the field, they say). The local media in both markets typed out a couple Open-Cup-focused pieces as well: the Rocky Mountain News writes about the likelihood of Conor Casey and Jose Cancela picking up rare starts while the Salt Lake Tribune notes the injury to Carey Talley (ouch!) and trade of Jeff Cunningham - though Talley only merits mention in the headline.
I'm not knocking any of that: beats the hell out of nothing, right?
In other spaces, a general feature on how Colorado is covering the gimpy holes in their backline makes for educational reading, as does a heart-warming look back at the Rapids' history in Open Cup play - thanks Colorado Rapids' Offside!
I'll close by laying down my marker: I say Colorado wins this one. Not exactly bold, I know, but I would have gone with Real Salt Lake had Talley not been injured.

SWAP-MEET: Roads in, and out, of TFC
Even with the trading frenzy seeming to pick up pace, all roads seem to run either to, or from, Toronto.
Conor Casey
In his latest manuever, "Mad" Mo Johnston seems to have finally come to grips with the number of strikers he was signing. I'm still not seeing "official word" on MLSnet.com, but have seen enough reports about striker Conor Casey heading to the Colorado Rapids that it seems safe to call it done. With one interested source reporting that Casey is already in Colorado and could suit up for Sunday's game against FC Dallas, it seems my question about who could partner Herculez Gomez up top for Colorado may have an answer. Then again, given his overall playing time this year, maybe not...
Anyone looking for a reason for the move, MLS Underground looks to have provided: sounds like Casey is from Colorado.
Richard Mulrooney
The trade that sent Richard Mulrooney from Toronto FC to the Houston Dynamo could very well count as the sucker-punch trade of the season so far: it's arrival went relatively unnoticed, but it carries the potential to tilt the odds in one party's favor. The Houston Chronicle does a one-two on this story: one article vaguely mentions Mulrooney providing "immediate help" to the Dynamo, without getting much into how; fortunately, Chronicle pundit Glenn Davis picks up the ball and explains that Mulrooney can provide cover all over in midfield, perhaps start at right back - just generally provide more flexibility to Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear.
Yeah, this strikes me as a decent signing.
One last thing to add here: Marvell Wynne has got to be the nicest professional athlete on the planet. I wish luck to anyone who's not only super-nice, but who also worries about his mom when making career moves.

DC United
In what looks like another phenomenon of the rich getting richer, DC United signed another Brazilian, Fred. Or, as his parents named him, Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva. Here's to hoping he doesn't adjust well to Major League Soccer. In other DC news, DCenters ran a good interview with new 'keeper Jay Nolly. There's some interesting stuff about picking up and moving across the country in there. Good job, guys.
Toronto FC
Conor Casey finally made it official with Toronto FC. It's nucking futs how long that deal took to come together. With Edson Buddle, Alecko Eskandarian, and, now, Conor Casey, they've got an interesting set-up at forward...and I think "interesting" is about as far as I can go on that one.
In other Toronto FC news, the Canadian also picked up bitter, bitter former Columbus Crew net-minder, Jon Busch. Good luck with it up there. I don't know what Sigi sees in Bill Gaudette, either.
Red Bull New York
Looks like RBNY picked up Chris Leitch. I get this one well enough, though Ives Galarcep, from whom I learned of this one, wonders whether another player will have to make room on the roster.
(NOTE: I'm doing the Robbie Rogers thing elsewhere...there's something about that one I can't stop picking at.)
Rumors and Addenda
The good folks at Sideline Views caught sight of former LA Galaxy trialist Laurent Merlin talking to a Chicago Fire official. Given that's been quiet lately, it probably means nothing, but it's a good photo nonetheless. One trade rumor looking a bit more solid, if far from complete: Cuauhtemoc Blanco to Chicago; Luis Arroyave reported on his blog that the fiery Mexican met with that Guppy guy from Chicago's front office. I remain cool to this move...can't help it.
Finally, I feel compelled to note that former #1 MLS-draftee Steve Shak looks to have signed with the Charlotte Eagles. Fascinating.
