Hurting Dempsey, Helping the Revs

From Frank Dell'Appa's latest in the Boston Globe (LINK):

"The timing of the move benefits the Revolution. [Clint] Dempsey actively tried to move on after returning from the World Cup and attracted a $2.5 million bid from Fulham, which MLS turned down in August. Dempsey was understandably upset by the decision, but it might have turned out to be a profitable one, as Fulham has nearly doubled its offer. And since MLS decided in November to substantially increase team shares of transfer fees, the Revolution's take could increase from a few hundred thousand dollars to more than $2 million.

Sometimes you read something a million times, but it takes a concrete example to flip the (rusted) switch in your brain. It literally took that paragraph for me to find the upside of Dempsey's likely departure to the English Premier League.

Sure, this larger situation sucked for Dempsey. But it's good to see the people that feel the loss most deeply - e.g. New England Revolution fans - receive some "green" solace. That takes this whole scenario to a win-win kind of place.

Nothing like covering your entire team's salary for a year with just one transfer. The Revs and their accountants must love this move.
