Trecker's Predictions for '07

Tucked at the bottom of Jamie Trecker's (decent) look back at the good and bad of 2006 one can find his predictions for Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2007. They're sufficiently provocative to be worth listing:

"1) MLS will next set down spikes in Cleveland and St. Louis.

2) Fans in San Jose are going to remain heartbroken.

3) Two major national team players will leave MLS next month. Another will want to leave but be prevented from doing so. It will affect his play and his team as a result.

4) David Beckham will not come to the USA — this year. Luis Figo will. The former will thrive in Europe, the latter will have no impact at all on the box office.

5) Serious questions will start to be asked about MLS' stadium plans, holding up construction in other cities.

6) SUM will try to launch its own soccer TV network — with the NHL as an ally."

Taking them in order: both #1 and #2 seem plausible enough - sorry San Jose, but the Midwesterner in me loves the sound of that; #3 sounds vague enough to make Nostradamus smile, but OK; as for #4, Figo? Really? I'm not seeing it; on #5, curse you Salt Lake City! (yeah, it's not over, but aren't you sick of it?); finally, #6 would make me a bit uneasy - let's try to stick with the brand names, fellas.
